The latest released by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) for 2024 revealed that there were 177,687 home burglaries reported in England and Wales. That’s an average of 487 burglaries a day.
What’s more, only five per cent of these result in a charge or caution.
Legal Expert’s CICA specialist Ellie Lamey says: “Being the victim of a burglary can be extremely invasive and traumatic not to mention those instances of aggravated burglary where weapons are involved.
“Moreover that shockingly low charge rate gives victims the impression that there is no support or justice following what can be in some cases, a life-altering event.
“Victims of burglaries can be left feeling abandoned and unsupported but it is important that they know there is help available for them.
“The Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) for example, is a government-backed organisation that can offer compensation to blameless victims of violent crimes throughout the UK. The payouts awarded depend on the severity, but they range from £1,000 to £500,000 and can be a vital resource for victims who need support to recover from an often traumatic event.”

How We Conducted Our Research Into Drink Driving Offences
Following an influx of inquiries from victims of home burglaries from across the UK, Legal Expert set out to investigate to the extent of the issue, identify the most targeted areas and look at charging rates and consequences for perpetrators.
We sent out Freedom of Information Requests to every UK Police Force asking for the number of home burglaries across in the last three years (between January-December 2022, 2023 and 2024).
We also asked for those record in the last year alone (2024), how many resulted in a person being charged or summonsed.
In 2024, we also requested a breakdown of areas that were most targeted as well as the number of offences deemed as ‘aggravated burglary’ – usually meaning weapons were involved.
