What to Do If You Have an Injury or Accident in Cyprus

There are certain steps you can take, both while you are still on holiday in Cyprus, and also when you return to the UK, to maximise your chance of winning the most holiday compensation possible. These steps are:

Steps to take while you are still on holiday in Cyprus:

  • If you have been involved in an accident such as a car crash, make sure that you have notified the police. Most of the time they will turn up at the scene, but if they don’t then you will need to call them (the contact number can be found further down this page). When you do speak to them, write down the names of any officers you deal with, and also ask them for the unique case ID and note this down as well.
  • If you booked your trip to Cyprus in the UK through a UK based package holiday firm, then you must notify them of your accident, injury or illness. Once again, not down the name of the person you reported to the event too.
  • Make sure that you receive proper medical treatment for your illness or injury (details on how to gain access to healthcare in Cyprus are further down the page). Write down the names of the doctors who treat you, and when you are discharged, ask for a copy of your medical file.
  • If you intend to claim against your medical or travel insurance, let your insurance provider know this.

Steps to take when you get back to the UK after your holiday in Cyprus:

  • If you had reported the incident to your travel vendor, then follow up with them to make sure they have all the facts straight.
  • Visit the hospital or your GP to have your injury or illness checked out. This will mean that the injury or illness is now recorded within the UK health service, which could be useful later in the claims process.
  • Let your insurance firm know that you have returned safely to the UK and that there will be no further claims.
  • Contact Legal Expert and find out how our No Win No Fee holiday compensation claim service can help you get the most compensation possible for your accident, injury or illness that occurred while you were on holiday in Cyprus.

Accessing Healthcare in Cyprus

If you are injured or become sick during your holiday in Cyprus, you are going to need to get professional medical treatment. The good news is, for UK citizens who have a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) it is possible to get free healthcare in Cyprus. However, it is important to note that EHIC doesn’t cover everything. For example, if you need outpatient treatment, EHIC won’t cover it. Or if you need emergency repatriation to the UK for medical reasons, EHIC won’t cover that either. If you have lost your EHIC or you forgot to take it to Cyprus with you, it is possible to get a temporary card by speaking to the Department of Health Overseas Healthcare on +44 191 218 1999. If you don’t currently have an EHIC, follow the link below to apply for one:

Another option is to use private healthcare facilities to treat any injury or illness while you are on holiday in Cyprus. You will, of course, need to pay the medical bills yourself, unless you are covered by travel or medical insurance. If you are covered, you will need to contact your insurance firm and have them approve any treatment before it is administered. Most insurance firms will deal with the private healthcare service in Cyprus and pay the medical bill directly to them. In certain situations, you might need to cover your own medical bill in cash while you are in Cyprus, and then claim it back from your insurance firm when you get back home to the UK.
